The Beekeeper (2024)

It’s mind-numbing action flick schlock with Jason Statham in it, but when you are in the mood for a mindless shoot fest, it’s almost worth it. Interesting premise executed in the most corny way, trying too hard to incorporate the beekeeping occupation itself in every other line of dialogue. Every time I heard something about the hive, it made me roll my eyes. In true Statham fashion, there is no real anxiety about whether he might die; he just dominantly beats the shit out of everybody except for one “difficult” opponent. I did enjoy the initial emotional stakes, as I can’t deny its plausibility. An elderly woman losing everything because of her technological illiteracy is unfortunately a very real scenario, and we understand why that would drive someone to suicide. Audiences love to see scumbags get what they deserve. For that reason, along with decent fight choreography and a ridiculous villain clusterfuck, it’s a fun watch.
