Bruce Almighty (2003)

Bruce Almighty attempts to bridge the gap between faith and reality. It is a humorous interpretation of a fundamental spiritual question: why does a benevolent higher power allow for suffering and tragedy? Bruce questions his faith after his professional and personal life falls apart within one day. This internal conflict leads to God offering him his own job, and thus beginning an odyssey of personal enrichment. At first, Bruce is drawn to his omnipotent power as a means of satisfying his selfish whims. The power corrupts him, inflating his ego in the process. In the process, he loses everything that he had once cherished. It is through this painful fall from grace that makes him understand the fulfillment of prayers through direct action and community, allowing him to reclaim his own humanity. It is a classic redemption story, told through the Hollywood sensationalist lens. It makes for an entertaining story which elucidates upon our shared challenges of faith and destiny.
