The Lego Batman Movie (2017)

The Lego Batman Movie combines fun action set pieces with a surprisingly strong commitment to the Batman mythos.

I have to be a child at heart, cause I enjoyed this a hell of a lot more than I expected. The Lego Batman Movie mixes heart and self-referential comedy with insane action set pieces in a show of fun spectacle. Its style of comedy that is expressive and ridiculous at the same time, employing a lot of concentrated bits and random gags to draw out laughter. The movie is not afraid to portray the wackiness of superhero universes, blanketing the city in bright pink and blue colors. I also liked Batman’s internal crises of loneliness and how it has infiltrated his very identity; I believe it is some of the most compelling depictions of this aloofness in a Batman film. I also found the symbiosis between Batman and Joker to be hilarious and clever.

It loses me a little with the introduction of all of the random non-DC characters though. I feel like it is a tired gimmick stemming from a superhero world’s fantastical elements. I also found that some parts of the film are overly frantic. Regardless, it is a movie that can be enjoyed by kids and adults alike.
